Coconut-Lavender Dream Cream

Perimenopause came early for this chic. At 38, I started being hot night, and the occasional night that I couldn't sleep. Fast forward 5 years, and I'm plagued with insomnia.  Admit it, you just counted in your head and figured out my age. Don't go blabbing it to the world!

Some of you know me fairly well and have seen my rants on Facebook at 3 am. Rather than spending my nights tossing and turning, calculating how much sleep I would get if I fell asleep right that second, and waking up Mr. Right I tend to spend those late nights with a good book or getting work done on my computer.  It takes hours for me to get to sleep and stay asleep.

Those nights that I don't sleep cause some really rough days. I'm cranky, unfocused,  and exhausted. My squirrel moments happen every few minutes and I can't finish anything I started. The insomnia has been worse the last few months and for a while I was contemplating very briefly, 'cause you know I can't focus on one thing for long with no sleep, taking an over the counter medication.

Now that I am on this journey of healthier living, I'd rather not take medicine when there is a more natural way to help me get to sleep. I'm sure you have used the sleepy baby shampoo with lavender and know that this fragrant plant can help your little one relax. But it's not just for kids.

Lavender Oil

What is Lavender Used for?

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. 

It is great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It can be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion. Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods.

With my insomnia, my husbands Chronic Fatigue, and my sons sleep disorders. Its a wonder we are all healthy. I scoured the Internet looking for ways to introduce my kids to lavender without having to diffuse it at night (since we only have one at the moment).  I found a safe alternative that also helps soften the skin. 

Dream Cream


.75 oz. (approx. 29ml) Beeswax Pellets 

4 oz. Organic Coconut Oil

8-12 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

2 - 2oz. jars or one 4-6 oz. jar


Melt the beeswax, slowly in a double boiler. I used my Pyrex measuring cup so I could easily pour it in the jar when it was done.

Next, add the coconut oil. This part takes me back to the beach.  You will start to smell the coconut. Too bad computers don't have scent technology. That would be so cool!

Once it's all melted add 8 - 12 drops of Lavender Essential oil. I didn't want it too strong since my husband and son have very sensitive noses. Ten drops was just the right amount for them. 

Once you have stirred it around to incorporate the lavender oil. Pour it in your jar/jars and decorate. 

How do I use it?

Apply about 20 minutes before bed on the bottom of your feet. Make sure you put some comfy socks on or you will slide everywhere.  It doesn't take long for the oils to absorb into your skin. The socks will prevent you from falling and also from getting it all over your furniture, sheets, etc. 

After about 20 minutes you will feel so relaxed. My husband was skeptical and told me to try it first and see how it works and then he will try it. He's hooked! He has chronic fatigue and it's coming out of remission. Not the greatest time for that. So he needs the best and most sleep out of all of us.  My youngest son has a sleep disorder and this helps him fall asleep in minutes and he stays asleep. It's amazing. And best of all there are no chemicals you can't pronounce or dyes. And you get soft smooth feet in the morning as well as a well rested family.
